Matan Weitz, Jewish Agency Israel Fellow

Matan grew up in a small town just outside Jerusalem and is a proud Israeli with a deep love for both nature and community. After serving as a combat commander in the IDF, he spent a year working in agriculture up north near the Sea of Galilee, before moving to Kibbutz Nahal Oz – a close-knit, resilient community literally on the border with Gaza. For the past four years, Nahal Oz has been his home and family, especially after the tragic events of October 7th.

Most recently, Matan served as the spokesperson for his kibbutz and was part of the hostage support team, working closely with families and supporters in Israel and around the world. He is now wrapping up these roles as he gets ready for his new adventure in Austin.

Matan holds a degree in Communications from Sapir College, with a focus on radio and podcasting. One of his biggest passions is writing, and he dreams of publishing his own book one day.

Raised in a traditional-but-secular family, Matan has always loved Israel’s landscapes and diverse culture, and his appreciation for Jewish values and traditions has only grown over time. He believes in honest conversation, bringing people together, and making everyone feel at home – especially during sunset hikes or over a great meal.

When he’s not working, you’ll probably find him swimming, watching sports (he’s a die-hard New York Knicks fan and will wake up in the middle of the night for their games), or lost in a good book.

Most of all, Matan is coming to Austin for you. He’s excited to meet everyone, listen, learn what students really want from Hillel, and help create moments that fit your vibe. Whether you want to chat about Israel, debate life, share your own idea, or just grab coffee – his door is always open.
