Internship Job Descriptions

 

Texas Hillel offers a number of internship opportunities through which outstanding students can make a unique impact on Jewish campus life while receiving an excellent professional learning experience.  Interns are responsible for building relationships with uninvolved Jewish students, plus coordinating and executing initiatives depending on the specifics of their job description.

The ideal candidate will be a student active in campus life with strong interpersonal skills, a commitment to Texas Hillel and Jewish life on campus and a strong desire to connect others to Jewish life while creating meaningful Jewish opportunities.

Interns are expected to work 8 to 10 hours a week including supervision sessions as well as regular leadership meetings.  Interns receive a stipend of $500 per semester. (First Impressions Interns are given a specific schedule and paid hourly.)  Interns may be required to attend a summer training.

Internships fall into two general categories – engagement and non-engagement:

Engagement

  • Student database analysis

  • Summer engagement
  • Tzedek
  • Youth group and camp alumni

Academic Area Focus Intern

This intern will build relationships and foster a sense of community within one specific academic area (e.g. business school, engineering school, honors programs, school of communications), as well as develop an initiative for this group.  This internship is part of the Campus Entrepreneurs Initiative (CEI).

Responsibilities of the internship include:

  • Reaching out to uninvolved Jewish students within an academic area.
  • Developing an initiative with the group.
  • Tracking and updating information about student interactions in the student database.

First Impressions Intern

This intern will actively engage with students, visitors and program participants making sure that every person who enters the building or calls is welcomed warmly.

Responsibilities of the internship include:

  • Connecting with students and responding to their needs and interests.
  • Serving as a knowledgeable Jewish resource for students (know what’s going on with all the different Texas Hillel groups).
  • Tracking and updating information about student interactions in the student database.
  • Ongoing training about building systems (e.g. A/V, computer, etc.) and policies.
  • Maintaining the security of the entrance area by controlling access to the building’s door locks.
  • Maintaining the physical appearance and cleanliness of the lobby.
  • Completing additional tasks as assigned.

Greek Life Intern

This intern will build relationships with members of the Greek community plus serve as the “face of Texas Hillel” with the five Jewish Greek organizations.  This internship is part of the Campus Entrepreneurs Initiative (CEI).

Responsibilities of the internship include:

  • Reaching out to uninvolved Jewish students within the Jewish Greek community.
  • Developing an initiative with the group.
  • Tracking and updating information about student interactions in the student database.

Israel Intern

This intern will work directly with Hillel’s Israel Fellow assisting with administration and programming.

Responsibilities of the internship include:

  • Managing the Israel part of the Hillel Database: uploading students’ interactions and keeping track of Israel involved students.
  • Helping with administrative tasks such as letter writing, phone calls, proofreading, etc.
  • Planning and executing the Birthright Israel recruitment plan with the Israel Fellow, including tabling, emails, phone calls, etc.
  • Initiating and planning Israel programs.
  • Maintaining and updating social media outlets.

Reform Youth Group and Camp Alumni Intern

This intern will build relationships and help foster a sense of community among students who have positive connections with their high school youth group or Jewish summer camp experiences.  This internship is part of the Campus Entrepreneurs Initiative (CEI).

Responsibilities of the internship include:

  • Gathering student data from national, regional, and local sources.
  • Determining the best method to reach these students e.g. reunions.
  • Tracking and updating information about student interactions in the student database.

Marketing and Social Media Intern

This intern will utilize social media and other means of marketing to promote Texas Hillel and Jewish life on campus.

Responsibilities of the internship include:

  • Maintaining and updating the Texas Hillel Facebook page, integrating the different Hillel groups and using the page as a marketing and an engagement tool.
  • Updating the Texas Hillel Twitter account to make it relevant and to publicize different events.
  • Updating the calendar on the Texas Hillel website, and suggesting improvements for reaching students through the website.
  • Overseeing tabling for Texas Hillel on campus.
  • Utilizing the Texas Hillel building for marketing.
  • Staying current on social media and marketing methods in order to implement at Texas Hillel.

New Student Intern

This intern will build relationships and help foster a sense of community among new students.  This internship is part of the Campus Entrepreneurs Initiative (CEI).

Responsibilities of the internship include:

  • Reaching out to new students utilizing data gathered over the summer and at welcome events.
  • Overseeing the new student ambassadors, a committee of upperclassmen tasked with developing on-going activities to engage new students.
  • Developing contacts in key residence halls (i.e. University Towers, Dobie Hall, The Castilian, Honors Quad, Jester Hall).
  • Tracking and updating information about student interactions in the student database.

Shabbat Intern

This intern will build relationships and help foster a sense of community with students who come to Friday night activities at Texas Hillel.  The intern will make sure that the Friday night atmosphere is conducive to this.  This internship is part of the Campus Entrepreneurs Initiative (CEI).

Responsibilities of the internship include:

  • Reaching out to Friday night participants, especially newcomers.
  • Tracking and updating information about student interactions in the student database.
  • Creating occasional themes for dinners.
  • Making sure the dining room is ready for Shabbat dinner.
  • Honoring students by selecting them to lead candle lighting and kiddush.

Student Database Analysis Intern

This intern will record and analyze student data in order to help staff and student leaders reach out to students in appropriate ways.

Responsibilities of the internship include:

  • Entering student data from numerous sources into the database.
  • Managing and sorting the entered data and passing it to the relevant staff and students.
  • Analyzing the data to find trends and possible interests of students.
  • Thinking of ways to improve the database.

Summer Engagement Intern

This intern will coordinate Texas Hillel’s presence at summer orientation with a particular focus on the organization fairs including all materials and follow up with individual students.

Responsibilities of the internship include:

  • Overseeing Texas Hillel’s involvement at the student organization fairs.
  • Planning an event for new students at Texas Hillel during each orientation.
  • Obtaining the names of incoming students through various means: e.g., congregations, youth groups, camps, rush lists, UT admitted student list.
  • Contacting and getting to know summer freshmen through phone calls, e-mails or in-person interactions (e.g., coffee or lunch meetings)
  • Preparing summer mailing to incoming Jewish students.
  • Planning move-in activities.
  • Tracking and updating information about student interactions in the student database.

Tzedek Intern

This intern will build relationships and help foster a sense of community among students who resonate with the social justice and community service agenda.  This internship is part of the Repair the World Fellowship.

Responsibilities of the internship include:

  • Reaching out to uninvolved Jewish students with an interest in social justice and community service.
  • Developing an initiative with the group.
  • Contacting campus philanthropic organizations to seek out Jewish participants and to promote projects of interest to both.
  • Tracking and updating information about student interactions in the student database.
